The International Conference on the Safe and Secure Transport of Radioactive Materials took place in October 2011 at the IAEA in Vienna. The findings identified a need for regulatory harmonisation pervading all levels.

IMRP 2011 Voted a Great Success

More than 500 delegates attended the 16th International Meeting on Radiation Processing that took place in Montreal in June.

The theme for the meeting was " Where Science and Business Connect", represented throughout the technical programme by presentations from all facets of the radiation processing industry, academia and regulatory authorities. Parallel sessions ran over 3 days on the subjects of Healthcare, Advanced Materials, Food Irradiation , Technology Developments and Evolving Applications. Special attention was paid to student contributors in a new plenary oral session showcasing the three most novel student papers that were submitted for poster presentation. The final call to action was presented by the Chair of the Programme Committee, Dr Eamonn Hoxey who drew together the highlights from each of the technical strands and encouraged the establishment to reach-out to the academic institutions to encourage the development of collaboration and mentoring of the new generation of industrial radiation processing professionals.

IAEA picking-up the pace on combating the denial and delay of shipment of radioactive materials

This problem is so important that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and United Nations (UN) modal organisations International Maritime Organization (IMO) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), together with industry organisations and national authorities, agreed an international action plan to minimise instances of delays and denials of shipment of radioactive material.

Expanding into Bigger Premises

REVISS is expanding into bigger business premises. We will not change our address but as of January 18th, REVISS will be fully installed in adjacent units 5 & 6 on the Chiltern Court Business Park.

The move follows the recent announcement that REVISS was appointed by the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation as the Principal Distributor of Isotopes and Radiation Sources from all the major Russian manufacturers.

Over the past 12 months REVISS has employed 6 new, full-time members of staff to cope with growing market share and pipeline business developments. The new unit will provide increased space for meetings and a dedicated relaxation area for staff.

We look forward to welcoming customers who may wish to visit us in the New Year.

Cobalt-60 is Good for YOUR Health

REVISS attended the International Association of Ports and Harbours' biennial Conference and Exhibition that took place in Genoa in Italy at the end of May. Our objective was to raise awareness amongst opinion leaders in the shipping industry of the importance of cobalt-60 in maintaining public health worldwide. We wanted to highlight the impact that the denial and delay of transit for class 7 radioactive cargo has on healthcare for each and every one of us.

A solution might be to establish a sub-category of class 7 radioactive materials for healthcare and humanitarian applications that, by virtue of low shipment volumes, must necessarily be carried alongside non-class 7 cargo. The objective for this sub-category would not be to amend the current legislation governing the packaging and handling requirements for IMDG class 7 cargo. It would be, more, to add an easily identifiable label to assist carriers and port authorities in combating misplaced political and environmental correctness that has legitimised local regulation that threatens the very quality of life it strives to protect. Clear identification might ease justification of transit for this vital cargo that is equally important to public health in nuclear friendly and, so-called, nuclear free regions of the world!

(AECL) has finally abandoned the programme of development of two MAPLE reactors that were to be the first in the world dedicated entirely to medical isotope production and were forecast to meet the entire global demand for Molybdenum-99.
